The Renovation of Casa Rodriguillo

From a neglected mansion to a rural B&B in Pinoso

When we bought Casa Rodriguillo in 2020, we knew we had taken on a big project.

The house had a long history, but years of neglect had taken their toll. There was a lot to repair, restore and rethink before we could welcome our first guests.

At the same time, the building had plenty of character. The thick walls, old tiles, wooden beams and two wine cellars were reminders of its past.

We did not want to turn it into a completely different building. Our aim was to preserve as much of the original character as possible while making it comfortable for modern-day guests.

Three years of renovation

The renovation took around three years. It was a process of working out what could be restored, what needed replacing and how everything could work together.

We worked on the guest rooms, bathrooms, floors, installations and outdoor areas. Throughout the project, we tried to find the right balance between traditional materials and modern facilities.

Today, the rooms combine original details with private bathrooms, air conditioning and underfloor heating.

It was not simply a case of stripping everything out and starting again. We wanted the house to retain its own identity, including the details that make an old Spanish mansion different from a newly built property.

The old wine cellars

One of the distinctive features of Casa Rodriguillo is its two old wine cellars.

They are reminders of the property's past and of the importance of wine and agriculture in this part of Alicante.

The wider region has a long wine-making tradition, and the old cellars help connect the house to that local history.

Throughout the building, we have tried to retain details that give the property its character. The result is a combination of old and new rather than a completely modern interior.

Modern comfort and more efficient energy use

Restoring an old house also gave us the opportunity to improve its energy efficiency.

We invested in insulation, solar panels and a heat pump, which provides efficient heating and cooling. We also introduced measures to reduce water consumption wherever possible.

For us, sustainability is about making sensible choices without compromising the comfort of our guests.

The aim was to create a house that respects its past but is also ready for the future.

Help from family and friends

A project of this size was not something we could do entirely on our own.

Family and friends supported us throughout the renovation, both practically and financially. We organised a crowdfunding campaign that helped make the project possible.

Their involvement is an important part of the Casa Rodriguillo story. The house is the result of three years of hard work, but also of people who believed in what we were trying to achieve.

Follow the renovation on YouTube

We documented much of the renovation and shared our experiences on YouTube.

The videos show the house as it was, the work that went into restoring it and the progress we made along the way.

If you enjoy seeing how an old property is transformed, you can follow the story on our Casa Rodriguillo YouTube channel.

Welcoming our first guests

In June 2023, we welcomed our first guests.

After three years of renovation, Casa Rodriguillo had become the place we had imagined: a historic Spanish mansion with its own character, combined with the comforts needed for a relaxing stay.

The work has given the house a new chapter in its history.

Today, guests can enjoy the rooms, garden and swimming pool while discovering Pinoso and the surrounding countryside.

From a neglected old house to Casa Rodriguillo. Three years of work, a lot of learning and a new beginning.
